A report by Auditor-General John Doyle has found that Victoria’s landfill management has improved since events at Brookland Greens in 2008, when thousands of residents were forced to evacuate after dangerously high levels of methane gas were detected in their homes due to gas leaks at a former landfill.
The audit assessed whether the EPA and local councils were complying with their responsibilities for construction, operation and management of municipal landfills.
According to the report, the EPA’s oversight and councils’ management of the highest risks associated with gas generation and contaminated landfills have significantly improved as a result of the EPA’s reforms. However the report also said improvement is required to better manage localised risks to the environment and surrounding community amenity from both active and closed landfills not designed and constructed to todays better practice standards.
